Cooking With Kids: NYC Farmer’s Market

At the Greenmarket, the kids become more invested in what they eat when they meet some farmers and learn about pesticide-free farming.

Why a farmer’s market? Because vegetables, fruit and eggs fresh from the farm are worth seeking out. They taste amazing, are packed with vitamins and nutrients, and are grown by local farmers who often accompany their food to the market and are happy to talk about it.

On a visit to New York City’s Greenmarket in Union Square, the kids meet some of the farmers. They learn about pesticide-free farming from John Gorzynski. Ron Binaghi explains heirloom tomatoes, how kids can grow potatoes, and the relationship of flavor and freshness. Zaid Kurdieh uses corn and colorful produce to teach seasonality. And Paul Dench-Layton and Jim Grillo teach the kids all about good eggs.
