Preparing an Avocado

Preparing an Avocado

Step 1
Starting with a washed avocado, remove stem (if present) and cradle the avocado in your hand.

Step2
Slide your knife into the avocado (along vertical axis) until you feel the blade hit the pit. Then turn the avocado around your knife in a circle until the avocado is cut all the way around.

Step 3
Twist the two halves apart to open.

Step 4
Using a tea towel to protect your hand, place the avocado half containing the pit in your palm. With your knife in the other hand, hit the avocado pit with the blade of the knife so the blade is embedded a bit in the pit.

Step 5
Gently twist the knife. This will release the pit from the avocado flesh.

Step 6
Discard the pit by knocking it off the knife on the side of your sink or into a trash can.

Step 7
With the tip of your knife, slice or score the avocado flesh vertically then horizontally, creating a pattern of squares or diamonds, and being careful not to pierce the skin.

Step 8
Using a large spoon, scoop out the avocado slices or cubes.

Step 9
Alternatively, you can use a large spoon to scoop the flesh out and then slice it afterwards with a knife.
